We offer a range of French language levels to suit beginner through to a higher conversation level. You will be taught a range of topics designed to help you when travelling, going on holiday, communicating with relatives, using the language for business etc. See the details below regarding the different courses.
All our language courses run from September to July. You enrol prior to each term commencing, There may be an opportunity to enrol mid course—call 0161 419 3620 to enquire.

Course Outline
This course is intended for complete beginners with no previous experience of French. We use BBC Talk French book 1 which encourages you to speak French from the very first lesson. The choice of situations and vocabulary is based on the everyday needs of people travelling to France.
You will be learning how to ask for information, talk about yourself and your family, your work and leisure, and say what you like to eat and drink. You will develop the listening skills needed to understand what people say at their natural speed. In addition, you will be able to identify key words and phrases in written French and so work out the general meaning. You will listen to songs and watch video clips, play games and do puzzles, meet new people and hopefully have a little fun on the way.

No previous experience of French is needed.

Course Outline
This course is for those who have completed a beginners’ course or studied French in the past and want to brush up on their existing skills. The course aims to build upon your previous knowledge of basic phrases to enable you to participate in simple conversations and feel more confident in France or other French speaking countries.
By the end of the course you will be able to:
- talk about yourself, your family and others in more details
- talk about your local area
- talk about activities, where you have been, and holiday plans
- talk about your free time and interests
- feel more confident when shopping, eating out and getting around in France.
- On completion of this course, you would be expected to progress to Intermediate Year 3.
Experience needed
You should have already done French at beginner level before starting this course. If you have studied at Aquinas College Adult Centre previously, you will have just completed French Beginners.

Course Outline
This course is for students who have studied French for two or more years and want to continue improving on existing language skills. The course aims to build upon previous knowledge of phrases and grammar to enable participation in longer and more complex conversations. Students may have completed the BBC Talk French 2 course and used the free online Kerboodle resources.
By the end of the course you will be able to talk about:
- Tourism and the regions of France
- Food and wine
- French culture, cinema, TV and songs
- Leisure, DIY and work
- Health and well-being
- The environment
- Any other areas of student interest including current affairs
Experience needed
You should have already studied French for 2 years or more. If you have studied at Aquinas College Adult Centre previously, you will have just completed BBC Talk French 2.

Course Outline
The aim of the course is to continue to build up your knowledge of French and increase your confidence in the language. This is a course aimed for those who feel comfortable with the basics of the French language and are ready to push their language further.
During the course you will cover a variety of topics. These will include: relationships and character, daily routine and special events, leisure interests and events in the past and plans for the future.
Class activities include discussion, debate, role-play, partner and group work and short individual presentations. You will be encouraged to prepare in advance by either completing reading or listening comprehension exercises, translating short passages, or producing oral summaries. Grammar points will be revised where necessary and vocabulary reinforced by completing short exercises.
Materials will be handed out during the lessons. If you need to buy anything, your tutor will advise you accordingly.
Homework is assigned each week and discussed in class to reinforce learning.
Experience needed
You should have already done 4 years of French before starting this course. If you have studied at Aquinas College Adult Centre previously, you will have just completed French (Year4/5).

Course outline
The course is suitable for anyone who has already studied French for 4+ years and who wish to build on their existing knowledge and enjoyment of speaking French.
We will discuss events and share opinions in an informal and friendly setting on topics ranging from current affairs, culture and sport, social and environmental issues, French
history and the French-speaking world. You can also suggest topics they would like to study and bring newspaper articles and materials to share.
Class activities include discussion, debate, role-play, partner and group work and short individual presentations. You will be encouraged to prepare in advance by either completing reading or listening comprehension exercises, translating short passages or producing oral summaries. Grammar points will be revised where necessary and vocabulary reinforced by completing short exercises.
By the end of the course the learner will be able to communicate effectively in French with increased confidence summarise information and give opinions, convey knowledge of French current affairs and use complex structures and a wider range of vocabulary.
Experience needed
You should have already done 4+ years of French before starting this course. If you have studied at Aquinas College Adult Centre previously, you will have just completed French (Year 5).
