Italian

We offer a range of Italian language levels to suit beginner through to a higher intermediate level (details below). You will be taught a range of topics designed to help you when travelling, going on holiday, communicating with relatives, using the language for business etc.

All our language courses run from September to July. You enrol prior to each term commencing. There may be an opportunity to enrol mid course—call 0161 419 3620 to enquire.

Course Outline

This is a course for complete beginners who wish to speak, read, listen to and learn Italian together. Using a variety of materials, we will explore the Italian language concentrating on vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation and hope to have fun while doing so.

This course will help develop your linguistic and cultural knowledge and understanding of Italy and will also be useful for trips abroad and of general interest to Italy enthusiasts.

By the end of the course you will be able to introduce yourself, give basic information about themselves and ask questions of others, shop for food and other items, count and spell in Italian, book accommodation and understand tourist information for a city, order food and drink, understand and give directions, tell the time and travel on public transport

Experience needed

No previous experience needed. This really is a class for complete beginners. No one should feel anxious – everyone will be starting together and be able to enjoy a supportive and effective learning environment

What will you need to bring

You will need to bring the following:

  • BBC Talk Italian 1 Book and CDs
  • Extra material will be provided as required
  • Paper or notebook to write in

Course Outline

This course is for those who have completed a beginners’ course or studied Italian in the past and want to brush up on their existing skills. The course aims to build upon your previous knowledge of basic phrases to enable you to participate in simple conversations and situations with Italians.

By the end of the course you will be able to:

  • talk about yourself, your family and others in more detail
  • talk about your local area
  • talk about holiday activities, where you have been, and holiday plans
  • talk about your free time and interests
  • feel more confident when shopping, eating out and getting around in Italy

On completion of this course, you would be expected to progress to Intermediate Year 3

Experience needed

You should have already done Italian at beginners level before starting this course. If you have studied at Aquinas College Adult Centre previously, you will have just completed Italian (Beginners).

What will you need to bring

You will need to bring the following:

  • BBC Talk Italian 2
  • Paper or notebook

Course Outline

If you have already attended a couple of years of Italian, then this is the right class for you! The aim of the course is to refine your knowledge of Italian and Italy and increase your confidence in the language. This is a course aimed for people who feel comfortable with the basics of the Italian language and grammar and are ready to push their knowledge further.

This course aims to consolidate vocabulary and grammar structures and broaden the learners’ understanding, enabling them to communicate more easily when travelling to Italy for business or pleasure. Using a variety of materials, including films and books, we will explore the language and culture of Italy, to gain a better understanding of the culture as a whole.

We will be focusing on the skills of speaking and listening, although there will also be some reading and writing, more detailed work on Italian grammar structures and other activities, all of which promote intercultural understanding.

Experience needed

You should have already done 2 years of Italian before starting this course. If you have studied at Aquinas College Adult Centre previously, you will have completed two terms of Italian (Year 2).

What will you need to bring

You will need to bring the following:

  • BBC Talk Italian 2 book
  • Paper or notebook

If you have already attended 3 years of Italian, have a good grasp of grammar and feel confident enough to have a conversation, then this is the right class for you! The aim of the course is to refine your knowledge of Italian and increase your confidence in the language. This is a course aimed for people who feel comfortable with the basics of Italian language and grammar and are ready to push their knowledge further.

This course aims to consolidate vocabulary and grammar structures and broaden the learners’ understanding, enabling them to communicate more easily when travelling to Italy for business or pleasure. Using a variety of materials, including films and books, we will explore the language and culture of Italy, to gain a better understanding of the country as a whole.

We will be focusing on the skills of speaking and listening, although there will also be some reading and writing, more detailed work on Italian grammar structures and other activities, all of which promote intercultural understanding.

Experience needed

The course is suitable for those who are already reasonably fluent in Italian, or who have already completed a 2-3 year course

If you have studied at Aquinas College Adult Centre previously, you will have just completed Italian (Year 4).

What will you need to bring

You will need to bring the following:

  • Paper or notebook
  • Coursebook TBCPen

Other materials will be handed out during the lessons. If you need to bring anything, your tutor will advise you accordingly.

Course Outline

The aim of the course is to refine your knowledge of Italian and increase your confidence in the language. This is a course aimed for those who feel comfortable with the basics of the Italian language and are ready to push their language further.

During the course you will cover a variety of topics. These will include: relationships and character, daily routine and special events, leisure interests, shopping for clothes and events in the past and plans for the future.

Homework assigned each week. Independent study encouraged.

Experience needed

You should have already done 4 years of Italian before starting this course. If you have studied at Aquinas College Adult Centre previously, you will have just completed Italian (Year 4).

The course is suitable for those who already have a reasonable level of Italian, or who have already completed a 4-year course. As revision of the basics will be undertaken, particularly at the beginning of the course, it is particularly suitable for those who have had a break from using Italian.

  • Pen
