Essential Digital Skills

Course starting January 2025

Essential Digital Skills Qualifications are modern qualifications designed to enable adults to develop their knowledge and skills to use in their personal lives, or to support them in their careers.

These courses equip learners with the skills needed to the make the most of mobile phone, apps and other digital services.

The 12 week course is perfect for learners with very few digital skills and is available at entry level and level one.

Students learn 5 key skills:

  • Using devices and handling information
  • Creating and editing
  • Communicating
  • Transactions and buying online
  • Being safe and responsible online

Further Information

Entry Level

This level is ideal for you if you’re able to turn on a device and swipe on the home screen.
You should be able to find and open apps.
You should be able to find the internet connection setting and turn on access to the internet.

Level 1

You should choose this level if you’re already able to install apps and find information on the internet.
You know how to save pictures and videos online, but you want to take your digital media and data skills
to the next level.

Learners must have the following foundation skills before enrolling on the qualification:

  • turning on a device (including entering and updating any account information safely, such as a password)
  • using the available controls on a device (such as a mouse and keyboard for a computer, or touchscreen on a smartphone or tablet)
  • making use of accessibility tools (including assistive technology) to make devices easier to use (such as changing display settings to make content easier to read)
  • interacting with the home screen on a device
  • connecting to the internet (including Wi-Fi) safely and securely, and opening a browser
  • opening and accessing an application on a device.

The course will run a Monday evenings from 6 until 9 p.m.

The course runs each term. The next course will start on 6th January.

The course is free for Greater Manchester residents who are 19 or older, and are assessed at below level 2 in digital skills.

The fee for non residents is £300

Students are assessed at the end of the course. The assessment consists of:

  • Task-based assessment
  • Question Paper
